Throughout the history of the United States of America, gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered Americans have defended the principles of the Declaration of Independence and Constitution through service in the United States Armed Forces. We, the members of Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Veterans of America , firmly believe that the inalienable rights secured to all Americans by those documents, the sentiments they represent, and the historic record of their defense by countless selfless citizens, include the right to privacy in our lives, and the right to live free open lives within the American society, irrespective of race, creed, ethnic, cultural or place of national origin, age, economic or marital status, gender or gender identification, sexual orientation, and actual or perceived differences in physical or other ability.

The United Nations Association-USA is a non-profit, non-governmental organization founded over a half-century ago. Its mission is to build public understanding of - and support for - greater international cooperation through the United Nations. With main offices in New York City and Washington, there are almost 200 chapters nationwide; San Diego is 6th largest. The San Diego Chapter (UNA-SD) was founded in 1946. Located in the heart of Balboa Park, the UN Building has been home to UNA-SD since 1960. Former First Lady and UN delegate, Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt, encouraged the San Diego City Council to provide the lease during her visit to San Diego in 1960.

Survivors of Torture, International (SOTI) is an independent, non-profit organization founded in 1997 to care for survivors of politically-motivated torture and their families. San Diego is home to the largest land border crossing in the world. SOTI estimates that there are approximately 11,000 to 14,000 torture survivors living in the San Diego region, based on the number of refugees, immigrants, and asylum-seekers here. Community surveys in the U.S. have found that nearly 25 percent of refugees have experienced some form of torture. There are over 55,000 refugees in San Diego alone from countries that are documented as systematically practicing torture; including those in Africa, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, South and Central America. In the last six months the southern California Political Asylum Office has encountered 5,109 asylum applicants, the majority of which come through the US-Mexican border into San Diego County. SOTI's clients come from all over the world.
